On October 30, 2024, the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering (EIE) welcomed Engr. Sanmi Gbadegesin, a seasoned data analytics expert, for an engaging lecture titled “Data Analytics – Revolutionising Decision-Making across Industries.” The lecture was delivered to the final-year students of the EIE department.
Engr. Gbadegesin began by introducing himself and highlighting his background as a pioneer in computer engineering, having earned his Bachelor's degree in the field in 2007. He then defined core concepts—data, information, and insight—emphasizing the journey from raw data to actionable understanding. To illustrate this process, he presented a case study where a university analyzed admissions data spanning ten years. The analysis uncovered trends such as rising enrollment rates and increasing diversity. These insights, he noted, empower organizations to make strategic, evidence-based decisions.
Engr. Gbadegesin also highlighted the transformative role of data analytics across industries through compelling examples. He detailed Uber’s use of dynamic demand mapping to optimize ride allocation, PayPal’s fraud detection systems achieving 99.9% accuracy, and healthcare’s reliance on real-time analytics to enhance patient care. Furthermore, he showcased how smart cities like Singapore leverage data to improve urban living through sustainable and efficient solutions. Each example reinforced the power of data analytics as a driver of innovation and operational excellence.
He concluded by addressing key challenges in the field, such as data quality issues, privacy concerns, and the growing demand for skilled professionals. Engr. Gbadegesin also pointed to emerging trends like AI-driven analytics and edge computing as the future of the industry.
At the end of the lecture, the Head of the Department of EIE, Dr. Samuel Isaac, expressed his appreciation for Engr. Gbadegesin’s insightful presentation. He commended Engr. Gbadegesin for sharing his expertise and for inspiring the students to recognize the vast potential of data analytics. Dr. Isaac emphasized that such engagements are crucial in bridging the gap between academic learning and industry practices, preparing students to excel in a data-driven world.
This lecture not only demonstrated the critical importance of data analytics in today’s industries but also inspired students to explore its potential in shaping the future. It reflected Covenant University’s dedication to preparing students for leadership in a data-driven world.
